Firefox hangs when loading clients1.google.com – Solutions

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I found that Firefox 3.5.6 was not loading Google.com in spite of trying a few times. I noticed in the bottom left of the browser (the status bar) that it was stuck at loading clients1.google.com. This was a new subdomain to me, so a quick search brought up a Google web discussion.

The initial suggestion by a Google employee to check for malware was not relevant. I had just performed a full system scan with no problems.

Another suggestion was to turn off Search Settings > Query Suggestions. I didn’t try it as I had no problem with that feature so far.

The third suggestion worked for me. At the top right of the Firefox page I changed the search provider from Google to Yahoo! and the search engine loaded as before. This doesn’t solve the problem, which is probably at clients1.google.com and not on my PC, but it is a workaround that suits me as I never use that search box in Firefox.

  1. Ash,

I found I was having the same problem, thanks for explaining why. It’s not long enough of hang to switch the home page from opening in Google, but at least I know now that it’s them, not me 🙂

  2. I think there must be some rubbish around the net. It is impossible that all around the planet still same problem…

  3. Faouzi, I know you posted a few months ago, but anyway – I don’t think Ash is suggesting changing your homepage, I think he’s referring to the quicksearch box at the top-right of the Firefox browser. I’ve changed mine to Wikipedia (hadn’t even noticed the box before to be honest!) and the hanging problem seems to be sorted for the time-being.

  4. Since Google was my startpage, I had to go to command line and do “[whatever path] firefox.exe about:blank” to even get it to start. Then I created an adblock-plus rule to block any site w/ google.com in the name (and changed my startpage). Crazy, but systems works fine now.

I just installed Chrome, I wonder if that did it?

  5. I’ve had the same problem with Firefox
I don’t know if disabling search suggestions wouldhelp but is sounds silly to me!

Today I figured this is Firefox issue because I didn’t have this problem with other browsers, then cleared the Firefox search history and problem solved 🙂
